Cast Iron Consulting works with nonprofits, public institutions, community organizations, funders, and businesses that want practical support around accessibility and inclusion.
Why a quilt pattern?
Cast Iron Consulting’s logo is based on a quilt pattern called “Log Cabin.” The pattern itself symbolizes home, warmth, and sanctuary. According to Appalachian folklore, safe houses along the Underground Railroad displayed different quilt patterns as signals or warnings. The Log Cabin pattern meant: “seek shelter here; these people are safe to speak with.”
Although Cast Iron Consulting serves clients from all over, it was founded by Southerners. It was important to us that our logo reflect not only that identity, but the history and responsibility that come with it.
Quilts are made from pieces that might otherwise have been discarded, but sewn together they create warmth, beauty, strength, and purpose. Grounded in the Disability Justice principle of interdependence, we believe every person is a meaningful part of the quilt of community and that no body or mind is disposable.
Together, we can be warm, safe, strong, and beautiful.
Why cast iron?
Cast iron isn’t delicate or disposable. Good cast iron gets better with time. It’s built to last, shaped through use, and passed down with care.
We believe inclusion should work the same way: grounded in lived experience, built for real people, and strong enough to hold up in practice.
We value the teachings that come from those before us; those who passed down knowledge and experience like an heirloom of liberation.
